MISSION

Safe Music Inc works to create, implement, and administer the Canada Safe Music Program. This program will include:

1) a Nationally accepted and adopted Code of Conduct,

2) a trauma-informed, unbiased, highly-trained Third Party responsible for the intake of reports, complaint resolution, and management of a public registry list, and

3) access to support services, education and awareness to prevent and address abuse, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation in Canadian music work and learning spaces.

Safe Music Inc is currently focused on classical musicians (tenured and freelance), music teachers (at Universities, Conservatories, and privately), and music students of all ages. As the program evolves, it is our mission to include all music genres, and performing arts.

WHY

The majority of classical musicians in Canada have heard of or experienced harassment from peers, mentors, and people with power. In recent years, a spotlight has been shone on this which has kindled a growing movement to change this culture. We at Safe Music Inc believe it is our imperative responsibility to learn from shared experiences and harness this momentum to better prevent and address abuse, harassment, discrimination and retaliation.
At Safe Music Inc we value dignity, accountability, transparency, education, support, empowerment, and compassion

The Team
The Intergenerational Safe Music Inc Volunteer Working Group is committed to building and supporting sustainable, sectoral, and systemic change within Canadian society so that all learners, teachers, and performers of music are free from abuse, harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

We are active performing musicians in Canadian orchestras, arts administrators, union representatives, private teachers, and professors and instructors  at Universities, and Conservatories across the country.

We are advocates and visionaries who, over our careers, have built many successful grassroots programs, arts-focused charities, and chamber music festivals, workshops, and special events, and are recognized and respected leaders in the emerging field of Musician Wellness research.

We have
witnessed and experienced first-hand the ongoing impact of conflict and abuse surrounding these issues. We are committed to cultivating the changes necessary to make our work and learning spaces safe.

Safe Music Inc is respectful of the roles the musicians union, organizations, Provincial Occupational Health & Safety, and the Canada legal system play in order to provide a work environment free from abuse, harassment, discrimination and retaliation.
